After graduating from Southern California Institute of Architecture, Hoshina and Tsutsumi worked at Patrick Tighe Architecture in Los Angeles for years as Project Architects under Patrick Tighe, FAIA, FAAR, where they contributed to a number of award winning projects including private residence, affordable housing, office, retail, installation projects. These projects have been published and exhibited extensively and internationally. Prior to the establishment of hannat architects, Hoshina served as a research fellow at Tohoku University, and Tsutsumi worked at Atelier Hitoshi Abe in Sendai, where she served to disaster restoration public housing, welfare facilities, restaurant, exhibition.&nbsp;After the establishment of hannat, the projects are diverse not only in building but also furniture and exhibition design. 島民約２５０人が住む離島に建つ交流拠点施設。島の海岸沿いには昔ながらの漁村風景が残り、それら家々の海側には埋め立てられた湾港や海道がはしる。この新旧の構造は観光客が利用する湾港や海道のハレ(非日常)と細い路地に面してひしめき合う家々のケ(日常)の関係を成す。施設はハレとケをつなぎ、観光客を迎い入れ島民の日常生活を豊かにする。施設は休憩所、案内所とこれら２つの建物と周辺環境をつなぐ縁側デッキからなる。地元産の木材をふんだんに利用し中央にはトップライトを設け人々が集まる中心をつくる。伝統行事や年間イベントに対応できるフレキシブルな計画とし島民と観光客の双方のドラマを演出する。 - Many islands exist around Japan’s main island and Oshima is one of them with 250 populations. A fishing village creates coastal landscape where landfill extends out to form a new street alongshore. Notion of new and existing constitutes the island structure. The coastal street serves visitors and existing street runs along local residential area, as recreational and day-to-day perspective. This building is where two characteristic streets meet, welcomes visitors and adds colors to everyday-life of villagers. The building consists of rest lounge, information and exterior deck. Local wood materials are used to form the space with a skylight at top that enlightens the gathering space. The open plan enables to accept local and traditional events and guides both visitors’ and villagers’ experience. As result of prioritizing efficiency, Mito City lost trees that help enrich city environment and rejuvenation of downtown became an urgent matter. This area has many fresh streams from surrounding mountains that flow into the Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. Rain water runs down the terraced site, which is to be used ecologically for greenery plants at gardens. The roofline is designed to match the scale of surrounding mountains and neighboring houses. Building codes allow using exposed wood materials while distinguishing hall with fire-proof wall from the rest of building. Greenery rain garden and facility are intended to harmonize the surrounding environment. 第３回国連防災会議における展示会場デザイン。東日本大震災の客観的事実と被災各地の取り組み事例を描く４０Mの壁面、東北４県と仙台市の取り組みを紹介する自治体ブース、プレゼンテーションステージ、宮城県３５市町村パンフレットスタンドの４つで構成される。展示壁面を織り込むことで空間のまとまりと抜けをつくる。照明効果により深海のような静けさを演出し高空に未来に向けた希望を表現する。 - This exhibition space design was for the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai. Space is composed of 4 different elements. 40 meters of wall display containing facts and statistics of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and case model of each disaster area. 5 display stands of Tohoku Prefectures and Sendai City are to introduce each challenges and strategy for recovery process. 35 municipal of Miyagi Prefecture brochure display stands and presentation stage are organized within the space. Weaving large display wall assembles the whole space together. Lighting effects create oceanic depths of stillness. Hope for reconstruction towards the future is expressed to the open sky.
